Dad, you can not protect your son from every injury, but you can teach him how to treat animals. He is not a small child, rather he is a teenager and he should know that if you show kindness to a cat, the cat will not hurt him. It is good for him to have a pet. It will teach him responsibility and kindness. If you decide to get him a cat, I would not get an older cat or a very young kitten but a cat 1–3 years old. My cat occasionally nips at me, but we are playing. It is not an injury, and it does not break the skin. He simply is playing. I would be remiss if I did not ask you to please adopt a cat from a shelter. There are great shelters that have cats that are up to date with their shots and have been altered. if you decide to let him get a cat, find a good veterinarian who can help you select the right food and what other things you will need. Your son should know how to clean the litter box. Your cat will find somewhere else to go if the litter box is dirty. Also, the rescue group I am a member of will not allow their cats to be adopted unless you assure them that Kitty will be inside only, and no declawing. I highly support no declawing. Cats can be trained to not scratch, but they remove the first knuckle when they are declawed. It is terribly painful to them. Good luck with the decision to get a cat. They can be a lifetime friend and bring joy to the entire family.
Oh! Don’t judge unless y’all walk on his boots It happens!I am in the same situation as him. We had a cat come to our yard, she’s the farmer’s barn cat. Sidenote: have you ever been to a farm where they have a passel of barn/feral cats? Breeding left and right? The farmer sold his place and moved. This one cat, Mommycat decided to adopt us. When she had her kittens, she hid them. If I had to know where, I would have socialized them. When they got a little older, we fed them but could not catch them. Do you know how much to sterilize them? $200–250, plus another $100–200 for shots. Three years later, ten cats from a year old to 3. Finally, I found someone in my area who would catch them, live cages and take them 150 miles away to get them sterilized at MNSNAP for fifty to sixty dollars each plus ten for shots. I looked for years for a TNR (trap, budget, release). I was at my wit’s end! I will pay for it and they are coming back here. Someone was kind enough to take Mommy Cat, get her sterilized. She can finally relax after all that taking care of her family, grandmother as well. We have her two, they were sick kittens and just so happens Mommycat must have put them out for to see and nursed them back to health. They are all beautiful, healthy…….Yes, sir, they will be healthy.
If I acquired kitties from someone who then later asked if I was happy with the adoption, I would be happy to tell them. I might even send some pictures. What is absolutely important is to make it clear you are not going to bring up the idea of asking for the cats back. Do NOT say you miss the cats. Do NOT ask for pictures. Do NOT ask if the cats are OK. Saying that you miss them and wanting pictures would raise a red flag to me. It would sound like you were having second thoughts or were somewhat suspicious about my ability to care for the cats. Rather ask if the adoption is working out. Say you are making your regular check in with all new owners to see if they are satisfied. Period. Short and to the point. You don’t mention how long ago the adoption took place. If recent, like within a couple of months, then asking if the owner is satisfied with the cats is OK. If the adoption took place much longer than a couple of months ago, I would wonder why you were waiting so long to ask. Again, a red flag. If the latter is true and the adoption is fairly old, just try to let it go. Trust your original instincts to re-home the kitties. Importantly, do not alienate the new owner by being invasive except to say you are conducting your usual follow-up to assess the satisfaction of the new owner with the adoption process. Business-like, non-emotional, to the point.
